How the Monuriki Day Works
What the day is, where it starts, what it costs and includes, what is on the island, who it suits, how it compares with the other Mamanuca days, and the Survivor closures.
Monuriki is a small, uninhabited island in Fiji’s Mamanuca group, and the island where Cast Away (2000) was filmed (Tourism Fiji). The one day trip carded on this site that lands on it is Cruisin’ Fiji’s day cruise from Port Denarau, sold on GetYourGuide as Fiji: Monuriki, Mana Sand Bar & Snorkelling Cruise: 8 hours from the 9:00 am departure, with swim and snorkel stops at Mana Sand Bar and Monu Cove, then 2.5 to 3 hours on Monuriki with a lovo lunch on the island. It is from US$135 a person (checked November 2026), with 686 reviews.
The short answer
Book it if you want to stand on the Cast Away island rather than see it from a boat, and if a full day of swimming and snorkelling suits you: the boat lands, lunch is cooked and served ashore, and the price covers the food, drinks, snorkelling gear and the transfer from a Denarau Island resort. Look elsewhere if you want a day with a pool, a bar and shade on tap, a short trip, or a day that suits a wheelchair: Monuriki is uninhabited, with no resort on it, and the listing marks the cruise not suitable for wheelchair users. The other Mamanuca day trips cover those, and none of them goes to Monuriki.

Where everything is

The Mamanuca Islands are a scatter of small islands off the west coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island, between the resort strip at Denarau and the open ocean. Port Denarau Marina, on Denarau Island just outside Nadi, is where the day boats leave from; Nadi International Airport is 12.5 km away by road, about 18 minutes without traffic. Monuriki sits near the outer, western edge of the group, 41 km from Port Denarau Marina in a straight line. It is small, 40.4 hectares, and steep, rising to 216 metres, with no village and no resort on it (National Trust of Fiji and partners, 2016). Getting there from Nadi has the pickups and the check-in.
The day, stop by stop
Check in at Cruisin’ Fiji’s Booth 6, on the waterfront outside the main passenger terminal building at Port Denarau Marina, from 8:00 am, or take the free pickup from a Denarau Island resort, which starts 30 to 60 minutes before departure. The boat leaves at 9:00 am. On Cruisin’ Fiji’s timetable the first stop, at about 10:00 am, is Mana Sand Bar, a sand bar off Mana Island, for a guided snorkel and a swim; then 30 minutes on to Monu Cove, a snorkel stop in a deep cove of Monu Island, with morning tea served on the way; then 15 minutes to Monuriki. You spend 2.5 to 3 hours on the island: the lovo lunch, food cooked slowly in an underground oven in the traditional Fijian way (Tourism Fiji) and served beneath bures, a guided walk to the places where Cast Away was filmed, a coconut husking demonstration, an optional hike to the summit, and time to swim and snorkel off the beach. The boat leaves at about 3:30 to 4 pm and is back at Port Denarau at about 4:30 to 5 pm, an hour’s run.

What it costs, and what the price buys
The cruise is from US$135 a person on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026). On Viator the same Cruisin’ Fiji day is from US$138 (checked November 2026): see the cruise on Viator. Cruisin’ Fiji sells in New Zealand dollars on its own site, and gives NZ$230 as its example of a booking that your card converts to about US$136 (November 2026).
The price covers the full day on the boat, the lovo lunch, snacks and fresh fruit, water, juice and soft drinks, beer and wine with lunch, snorkelling equipment and life jackets. A Port Denarau Marina departure levy of a few Fijian dollars per passenger is paid at check-in. Return transfers are free from Denarau Island resorts; from hotels elsewhere, in Nadi, Wailoaloa or along the coast, a transport fee applies, and neither the GetYourGuide nor the Viator listing gives the amount, so give your hotel when you book and the pickup time and any fee come back with the confirmation. Bring your own towel and sunscreen: neither is included.
What is on Monuriki
Monuriki is a rugged island of dry forest and beach, and no one lives on it. Its land-owning clan is the Mataqali Vunaivi, who in April 2010 signed an agreement with the National Trust of Fiji and Kula Eco Park to clear the island’s goats and breed its iguanas in captivity (National Trust of Fiji and partners, 2016). The Fijian crested iguana that lives there is listed as Critically Endangered and is protected under Fiji’s Endangered and Protected Species Act 2002; goats and rats were removed in late 2011, and 32 captive-bred iguanas were released back on the island in May 2015. The same report calls Monuriki a very popular tourist destination with several boats and many people visiting every day, so expect company on the beach. Do not plan on seeing an iguana: NatureFiji calls the crested iguana a master of camouflage that is hard to spot in the forest by day, and the cruise does not promise one. The Cast Away island has more on the film and the island.
Monuriki, or another Mamanuca day
Most Mamanuca day trips from Port Denarau go somewhere else: a beach club island, a resort, a sand cay, a floating bar. They suit a lazier day, with a pool, sun loungers and a bar, and several are shorter. If the reason you are going is Cast Away, or a day that is mostly in the water and on an island with nothing built on it, the Monuriki cruise is the one; Monuriki or another Mamanuca day trip sets the popular ones side by side. One trap: Castaway Island, the resort island also called Qalito, is a different island, about 17 km from Monuriki in a straight line, and the day trip there does not go to Monuriki.
Survivor filming, weather and when to go
The US Survivor series has filmed in the Mamanuca Islands for more than a decade (Tourism Fiji), and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has published filming exclusion zones round Monu Riki, its spelling of Monuriki, in April to June or July: from 15 April to 3 July 2026 in its notice MN 08/2026, and in 2021, 2023 and 2025 before it. On 3 November 2026 no Monuriki notice was on the authority’s list. If you are going between April and July, check the authority’s marine notices before you book; Survivor filming has the dates.
Fiji’s wet season runs from November to April, with long warm days, short afternoon downpours and more humidity; the dry season, from May to October, is a little cooler, with 50 to 75% less rain (Tourism Fiji). The water stays warm all year. Weather and what to bring has the detail, and is the Monuriki tour worth it weighs the day for families, couples and snorkellers.
A Day on the Cast Away Island
Port Denarau at 9:00 am, a sand bar, a snorkel cove, then 2.5 to 3 hours on Monuriki with a lovo lunch. Back at about 4:30 to 5 pm. Starting from US$135 per person.

Monuriki Island Tour: Questions
Where Monuriki is, the Cast Away connection, landing on the island, the price, times and the start at Port Denarau, Survivor filming, the iguanas, what to bring and when to go.
In the Mamanuca Islands, off the west coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's main island: 41 km in a straight line from Port Denarau Marina. It is small and uninhabited, 40.4 hectares rising to 216 metres (National Trust of Fiji and partners, 2016). The day cruise reaches it after two stops on the way. See getting to Monuriki.
Yes. Tourism Fiji names Monuriki, in the Mamanuca Islands, as the island where Cast Away (2000) was filmed. It is not Castaway Island, the resort island also called Qalito, about 17 km away in a straight line. See the Cast Away island.
Yes: Cruisin' Fiji's day cruise from Port Denarau lands there for 2.5 to 3 hours, with lunch on the island. Tourism Fiji also mentions boats from the nearby resorts. No one lives on Monuriki; its land-owning clan is the Mataqali Vunaivi (National Trust of Fiji and partners, 2016).
From US$135 a person on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026). That covers the 8-hour cruise, snorkelling equipment, a lovo lunch, snacks, fruit and drinks, and transfers from Denarau Island resorts. From hotels outside Denarau a transport fee applies; neither listing gives the amount. A Port Denarau Marina departure levy of a few Fijian dollars per passenger is paid at check-in.
8 hours. The boat leaves Port Denarau at 9:00 am and is back at about 4:30 to 5 pm. Check-in opens at 8:00 am. On Cruisin' Fiji's timetable the stops are Mana Sand Bar at about 10:00 am, Monu Cove, then 2.5 to 3 hours on Monuriki, leaving at about 3:30 to 4 pm for the hour back.
From Cruisin' Fiji's Booth 6, on the waterfront outside the main passenger terminal building at Port Denarau Marina, Nadi. Pickups from Denarau Island resorts are free and start about 30 to 60 minutes before the 9:00 am departure; the exact time comes with the reconfirmation. See getting there from Nadi.
Not to passing boats while a filming exclusion zone is in force. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji's notice MN 08/2026 closed the waters within 1 nautical mile of Monu Riki, Monu, Mana and three other islands from 15 April to 3 July 2026, and similar notices covered April to June or July in 2021, 2023 and 2025. On 3 November 2026 no Monuriki notice was on the authority's list. See Survivor filming.
Do not count on it. The Fijian crested iguana lives on Monuriki and Monu, and NatureFiji calls it a master of camouflage that is hard to spot in the forest by day. It is listed as Critically Endangered and protected under Fiji's Endangered and Protected Species Act 2002; captive-bred iguanas were released on Monuriki in 2015. The cruise does not promise a sighting.
Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a sun hat. Towels and sunscreen are not included. Add any personal medication, a motion sickness remedy if you need one, and a camera. See weather and what to bring.
Children yes, with an adult; wheelchair users no. The GetYourGuide listing marks it not suitable for wheelchair users or people over 95. On Viator, children under 16 must be with an adult, and the minimum drinking age is 18.
Any month, with drier days from May to October. Fiji has a wet season from November to April, with short afternoon downpours, and a dry season from May to October, when rainfall drops by 50 to 75% (Tourism Fiji). The water is warm all year. See Monuriki weather.
